How to prepare your home for post-hospital recovery
A smooth recovery starts before the patient gets home. A few simple preparations make the first week much easier.
Coming home after surgery or a hospital stay is often harder than families expect. The house itself matters as much as the care plan.
Start with the essentials: a clear path from the bed to the bathroom, a chair with armrests for resting, frequently used items at waist height, and good lighting at night. Remove loose rugs and cables that could cause falls.
Next, set up a simple routine — meal times, medication reminders, light walks as advised, and short check-ins with family. Keep discharge instructions and contact numbers in one visible place.
Finally, arrange support for the first two weeks: a caregiver can help with meals, mobility and personal tasks while family members recover from the hospital period too. Recovery is a team effort.
